After the tables and chairs were pushed to their corners, the true reason for the wood floor at the Great Midwestern Ice Cream store was made evident--it is to TANGO!
About 24 folks participated in Oscar Lara's first tango lesson/meeting/event of the season. We began the process of learning to walk in tango--we walk, but to the tempo of the music. Then comes stopping, turning, leading and following. We even had a short "quiz" to see how we were doing on walking across the floor as tango dancers.
Jane and I met folks we know, and a number of folks new to us. Hello, and thank you for our participation in learning Argentine Tango. Men, you must really LEAD in tango--no question about it. Other dances you should lead too, but in tango it must be strong and always there!
After our 2 hours of watching, learning, dancing, many of us went to The Mill to enjoy each other's company, talk about dance and life. It was for us a great evening all the way around. Many thanks, and we hope to see you all at the next tango opportunity if not before! And Thank You Oscar, Nora, Juan, Kameron for bringing this opportunity to us.

We saw a number of familiar faces at this excellent event! And some folks we know from other dancing arenas! In all the years we have lived in Iowa City we have never been to the Eagles Club before. Needless to say we were more than surprised at the nice room and the excellent smooth wood dance floor! And for us non-smokers, the dance room was non-smoking. Smoking in the front bar only.
A huge thanks to Nora Marcos, Oscar Lara, Kameron Spears for organizing this event and for booking Extasis to perform. What great music, both contemporary and traditional tango! Oscar and Kameron gave a brief lesson of how to do the "walking tango." Oscar took turns dancing with many of the women in attendance, demonstrating how they really *could* dance--and that in Argentine Tango the man must be a strong dance leader. Argentine Tango is both a walking dance and a turning dance. From a few basic moves you can begin dancing immediately. It is the decorations you include in basic moves that add to the level of complexity. Some folks primarily listened to the music but most danced. I suspect some started dancing where they had planned to just listen. It's hard to resist dancing to a real Tango orquesta! If Extasis come through Iowa City again---DON'T MISS THEM--you will thoroughly enjoy yourself!
